Why Do Men Abstain From Sex?

Abstinence among younger men might be more common than you think. In a recent review of medical studies, scientists report that abstinence rates among men age 60 and under could be as high as 84%. They caution, however, that that figure depends on how other researchers define “sex.”

For example, one study might consider sex to be only penile-vaginal intercourse. Another might consider masturbation to be sex. 

Still, the review offered a number of reasons why men might abstain.

What is Abstinence?

In its simplest form, abstinence is the decision not to have sexual intercourse. However, it does mean different things to different people. Some people might view abstinence as refraining from any and all sexual activity. Others might engage in outercourse, avoiding vaginal or anal penetration.

In a study looking at data from 17,744 people in the United States, 15.2% of males and 26.7% of females reported having no sex in the last year, while 8.7% of males and 17.5% of females reported not having had sex for 5 years or more.

The authors concluded that “sexless Americans reported very similar happiness levels as their sexually active counterparts.”

In this article, we look at what might happen physically and psychologically when a person does not have sex for a long time and how it might affect people in a relationship.

Many Men Are Having No Sex At All

How many men around the world aged 60 and under abstain from sex? The answer may depend on how you define “sex,” but a recent review of studies suggests it could be up to 84%.

The researchers considered males between the ages of 10 and 24 “young” and those aged 25 to 60 as “middle-aged.”

They also distinguished between primary and secondary abstinence. Men in the first category have never had any sexual activity, alone or with a partner. Men with secondary abstinence were not having sex regularly at the time of the study.

Young men were more likely to be abstinent than middle-aged men.

Why Are Some Men Choosing Abstinence?

Some of the factors associated with abstinence included age, lack of a partner, less education, and lower socioeconomic status. Some men were abstinent because of their moral or religious beliefs. Others had less sex education and less knowledge about sexually-transmitted infections and birth control. And others were in unhappy relationships that made them less inclined to have sex.

The results should be interpreted with caution, the authors noted. Not all of the reviewed studies defined “sex” in the same way. For example, the term specifically meant penile-vaginal intercourse in some studies but did not include masturbation.

Also, the results can’t be applied to all men worldwide, the authors said. Fewer studies from Asia and Australia were available. None of the studies were done in South America.

Testosterone Levels Have Fallen in Younger Men

Testosterone levels have been dropping among adolescent and young adult males in the United States, according to new research in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. 

The findings are based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). 

During the 1999-2000 survey cycle, the average testosterone measurement for men aged 15 to 39 was 605.39 ng/dL. By the 2015-2016 cycle, that number had dropped to 451.22 ng/dL.

In the United States, testosterone levels have declined in adolescent and young adult men since 1999, according to a recent study.

The hormone testosterone plays an important role in men’s health. (Women’s bodies also produce testosterone, but in much smaller amounts.) Testosterone gives a man his masculine traits, like facial hair and muscle mass. It contributes to bone health.

And it’s critical for sexual function and fertility. Libido, erections, and sperm production are largely driven by testosterone.

When does male Testosterone go down?

Around age 30, a man’s testosterone levels start to fall. It’s a natural part of getting older, and the process is gradual. Typically, a man may be diagnosed with testosterone deficiency if his levels fall below 300 ng/dL and he has symptoms like low sex drive, fatigue, and moodiness.

While younger men usually don’t need to worry about age-related testosterone declines, researchers have noted that almost 20% of adolescent and young adult men do have testosterone deficiency.

Researchers set out to learn more about the average testosterone levels for men in this age group. They worked with data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), a large-scale study of adults in the U.S. In particular, they looked at information for men aged 15 to 39 over 5 survey cycles between 1999 and 2016.

Testosterone levels – At a Glance

Overall, 4,045 men had their total testosterone levels measured during these time periods. The researchers reported the following averages:

The researchers also noticed that men with a higher body mass index (BMI) were more likely to have lower testosterone levels. The men’s average BMI increased from 25.83 in the 1999-2000 cycle to 27.96 in the 2015-2016 cycle. (Average BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9. People with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight. Obese people have a BMI of 30 or higher.)

However, even for men with normal BMI, average testosterone levels dropped from 664.79 ng/dL in the 1999-2000 cycle to 529.24 ng/dL in the 2015-2016 cycle.

The results “may have large ramifications as low testosterone has been linked to underlying comorbidities and potentially increased mortality risk,” the study authors explained.

The findings were presented in October 2019 at the 20th Annual Fall Scientific Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA), held in Nashville, Tennessee.

Try to work up to doing it for a full minute, 3 to 4 times a day before you move on to the next exercise. At first, you will probably only be able to do it for 5 to 10 seconds. When you gain control of this muscle, you can stop premature ejaculation in its tracks by contracting this it.
  2. Flex and Hold the PC Muscle. Flexing and holding your PC muscle will make it a lot stronger. When you have a stronger PC muscle, you will be able to shoot your cum farther than before. This technique can also stimulate semen production, but its main benefit is being able to shoot as far as you can. To do this exercise, flex and hold your PC muscle for as long as you can. At first, you may only be able to hold it for a few seconds. Try to work the time up to a full 10 seconds, with full force.   3. Flex, Hold, Release – REPEAT. Try to do it for 3 to 5 minutes. When you get stronger, try it for even longer. After a lot of practice, you might be able to do it for up to 20 minutes or so. You only need to do this exercise once a day because it’s such a good workout for your PC muscle. This exercise will teach you how to control your kegel muscle. It’s one thing to squeeze as long as possible, or for as many reps in a set time, but a true master will have complete control over his PC muscles. This means you can turn them on and off, whenever you want. Practice all three of these exercises as instructed through the week. Lastly, make sure you rest enough. The kegels are muscles after all, and need to rest, just like your biceps. Practice, rest, and soon enough, you’ll be shooting huge loads.

As with any exercises – seeing results can take some time, so be patient. If you do Kegels three times a day, you should see improvement in the force of your ejaculations within three to six weeks — some men see it even sooner. The University at Buffalo study was the first to exam marijuana’s effects on the specific swimming behavior of sperm from marijuana smokers and to compare the results with sperm from men with confirmed fertility.

New research suggests men in their child-bearing years should consider how THC could impact their sperm and possibly the children they conceive during periods when they’ve been using the drug. Much like previous research that has shown tobacco smoke, pesticides, flame retardants and even obesity can alter sperm, the new research shows THC also affects epigenetics, triggering structural and regulatory changes in the DNA of users’ sperm.

The study defined regular users as those who smoked marijuana at least weekly for the previous six months. Their sperm were compared to those who had not used marijuana in the past six months and not more than 10 times in their lifetimes.

The higher the concentration of THC in the men’s urine, the more pronounced the genetic changes to their sperm were, the authors found.

Different Study – Same Conclusion:

Another study has come to the same conclusion. While researchers are still unsure of the exact reasons for these effects, the results of studies clearly reveal that the active ingredients found in marijuana impact sperm and negatively impact fertility, according to Lani J. Burkman, Ph.D., lead author on the study.

“We don’t know exactly what is happening to change sperm functioning,” said Burkman, “but we think it is one of two things: THC may be causing the improper timing of sperm function by direct stimulation, or it may be bypassing natural inhibition mechanisms.”

The Buffalo study also discovered in the andrology laboratory showed that human sperm exposed to high levels of THC displayed abnormal changes in the sperm enzyme cap, called the acrosome.

When the investigators tested synthetic anandamide equivalents — an essential fatty acid neurotransmitter — on human sperm, the normal vigorous swimming patterns were changed and the sperm showed reduced ability to attach to the egg before fertilization.

What does this mean for male fertility?

It’s already been well established in tons of research that men in Western countries are facing a fertility crisis. Sperm count in males of reproductive age more than halved between 1973 and 2011.

According to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, approximately 9 percent of men in the United States have faced infertility.

In a new study, a team of investigators from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA, has focused on the effects that smoking marijuana has on markers of male fertility. The researchers’ findings, which they report in a study paper that features in the journal Human Reproduction, ran counter to the hypothesis that they established at the beginning of the study.

“The unexpected findings highlight how little we know about the reproductive health effects of marijuana and, in fact, of the health effects of marijuana in general,” notes study author Jorge Chavarro.

“Our results need to be interpreted with caution, and they highlight the need to further study the health effects of marijuana use,” he emphasizes.

Questions around male fertility

The World Health Organization estimates that one in every four couples of reproductive age in developing countries experiences childlessness despite five years of attempting pregnancy.

A separate study estimated that more than 45 million couples, or about 15% of all couples worldwide, were infertile in 2010, while another unrelated study suggested that men were solely responsible for up to 30% and contribute up to 50% of cases overall.

Meanwhile, a recent analysis published in the journal Human Reproduction Update found that sperm counts of men in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand are plunging. Researchers recorded a 52% decline in sperm concentration and a 59% decline in total sperm count over a nearly 40-year period ending in 2011.

If you’re a man suffering from depression and you’re trying to conceive, your depression could re impacting your chances of fathering a child.

Depression in male partners has been found to reduce your chances of getting pregnant. A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility looked at data from 1,650 women and 1,608 men with unexplained infertility who were screened for depression and questioned about anti-depressant use.

male depression and fertilityAmong couples being treated for infertility, depression in the male partner was linked to lower pregnancy chances, while depression in the female partner was not found to influence the rate of live birth, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

The study also uncovered a link between anti-depressants, specifically non- SSRIs (non-selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) to miscarriage in women.

 

What does this mean for male fertility?

The bottom line is that depression in the male partner can have a significant impact on a couples chances of conceiving a child. In fact, couples in which the male partner had major depression were 60 percent less likely to conceive and have a live birth than those in which the male partner did not have major depression.

The study, which appears in Fertility and Sterility, also linked a class of antidepressants known as non-selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (non-SSRIs) to a higher risk of early pregnancy loss among females being treated for infertility. SSRIs, another class of antidepressants, were not linked to pregnancy loss. Neither depression in the female partner nor use of any other class of antidepressant were linked to lower pregnancy rates.

“Our study provides infertility patients and their physicians with new information to consider when making treatment decisions,” said study author Esther Eisenberg, M.D., of the Fertility and Infertility Branch at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), which funded the study.

Citing previous studies, the authors noted that 41 percent of women seeking fertility treatments have symptoms of depression. In addition, a study of men seeking IVF treatments found that nearly 50 percent experienced depression. The authors conducted the current study to evaluate the potential influence of depression in couples seeking non-IVF treatments.

The researchers combined data from two previous studies funded by NICHD’s Reproductive Medicine Network. One study compared the effectiveness of two ovulation-inducing drugs for establishment of pregnancy and live birth in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. The other study compared the effectiveness of three ovulation-inducing drugs at achieving pregnancy and live birth in couples with unexplained infertility. In each study, men and women responded to a questionnaire designed to screen for depression. Only the women were asked whether they were taking any antidepressants.

From the two studies, the researchers analyzed data for 1,650 women and 1,608 men. Among the women, 5.96 percent were rated as having active major depression, compared to 2.28 percent of the men.

Women using non-SSRIs were roughly 3.5 times as likely to have a first trimester pregnancy loss, compared to those not using antidepressants.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, in around 40% of infertile couples the male partner is the sole cause or contributing cause of infertility.

The main cause of male infertility is sperm abnormalities, including low sperm production or misshapen or immobile sperm. Medical conditions – such as undescended testicles or ejaculation problems – can lead to sperm abnormalities, as well as health and lifestyle factors.

In this latest study – published in the journal Fertility and Sterility and led by researchers from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York, NY, and Rutgers School of Public Health in Piscataway, NJ – the team investigated whether stress may affect sperm and semen quality.

The researchers found that men who experienced two or more stressful life events in the past year had a lower percentage of sperm motility and a lower percentage of sperm of normal morphology, compared with men who did not experience any stressful life events. They note this finding remained even after accounting for other factors that may influence semen quality, such as age, other health problems and history of reproductive health problems.

Although workplace stress did not directly affect semen quality in the men, the researchers found that those who experienced job strains had lower levels of the hormone testosterone in their semen, which could affect reproductive health.

In addition, they found that regardless of the levels of stress experienced, men who were unemployed had lower semen quality than those who were employed.

Is Prostate Cancer connected to how often you ejaculate?

Despite the importance of prostate cancer, its causes remain unknown. Scientists do know that genetics plays a strong role, and they have sound evidence that diet and other lifestyle factors are also important.

Since the prostate is a reproductive organ that produces fluid for the ejaculate, researchers have long wondered if sexual factors influence a man’s risk of prostate cancer, but a Harvard study provides good news for sexually active men.

Frequent ejaculations (20+ times or more per month) can significantly reduce your chances of getting prostate cancer later in life.

The Harvard Study

harvard ejaculation and prostate cancer studyThe Health Professionals Follow-Up Study has been collecting information about a large group of volunteers since 1986. All the men are health care providers, including dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, optometrists, ophthalmologists, and podiatrists.

Most are white. In 1992, 29,342 men between the ages of 46 and 81 provided information about their average number of ejaculations per month in young adulthood (age 20–29), middle age (40–49), and in the most recent year. Ejaculations included sexual intercourse, nocturnal emissions, and masturbation. The volunteers provided comprehensive health and lifestyle data every two years until the study concluded in 2000.

The scientists found no evidence that frequent ejaculations mark an increased risk of prostate cancer. In fact, the reverse was true: High ejaculation frequency was linked to a decreased risk.

Compared to men who reported 4–7 ejaculations per month across their lifetimes, men who ejaculated 21 or more times a month enjoyed a 31% lower risk of prostate cancer. And the results held up to rigorous statistical evaluation even after other lifestyle factors and the frequency of PSA testing were taken into account.

australian prostate cancer studyAn Australian study of 2,338 men examined the impact of sexual factors on the occurrence of prostate cancer before the age of 70. Like the Harvard research, the Australian investigation evaluated total ejaculations rather than sexual intercourse itself.

 

Like the American men, the Australians who ejaculated most frequently enjoyed a reduced risk of prostate cancer. The effect was strongest for the frequency of ejaculations in young adulthood, even though prostate cancer was not diagnosed until many decades later.

 

Even so, the apparent protection extended to all age groups. In all, men who averaged 4.6–7 ejaculations a week were 36% less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 than men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week on average.

 

Other possible links.

The Australian study did not measure testosterone levels, but the Harvard study did. It found that men who ejaculated frequently tended to have higher testosterone levels than those who ejaculated less often — yet these were the same men who had a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Therefore, if there is any adverse effect of male hormones, it is offset by some protective effects linked to frequent ejaculation. Further study is needed to investigate possible protective mechanisms; in theory, at least, emptying the prostate of potentially irritating or harmful substances might be one such mechanism.

The Harvard study did not evaluate the number of sexual partners reported by the volunteers, but the Australian study did. It found no association, but an earlier study of 1,456 men living in King County, Washington, did find a link. Men who had sex with 30 or more women over their lifetime were two to three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than men with only one partner. Thirty partners may sound like a lot, but boasting did not seem to boost a man’s risk, since even a more modest exposure to two to four partners was associated with a 1.7-fold increase in subsequent prostate cancer.

The Harvard study did not report an effect of marital status, but the Australian research suggested that men who had never married may be at lower risk of prostate cancer than men who were married, divorced, or widowed. However, an American study of 146,979 men found that among men with diagnosed prostate cancer, those who were married had a better outcome than those who were divorced, widowed, or single. The researchers at the University of Miami who performed the study did not determine if sexual activity was involved in apparent protection, but since the subjects were elderly men with prostate cancer, it’s unlikely.

Conclusion

So what does all this scientific mumbo jumbo mean to you? Well, the bottom line is this – if you’re a man and you have a penis – then there’s a really good chance that ejaculating frequently will improve your overall health, and specifically reduce your chances of developing prostate cancer.

While more research needs to be done – what we know at this point is that ejaculating 20 or more times per month can reduce your chances of prostate cancer by almost 40% – and that’s nothing to sneeze at.

First of all, don’t worry guys – this isn’t a trick question! Also, please note that the article is based on how often you should “ejaculate” – NOT masturbate! Of course we fully advocate masturbating as often as you see fit!

Seriously though, most guys will admit that ejaculating is both pleasurable and rewarding – and most of us would like to do it as often as possible. But did you know that how often you ejaculate actually affects your overall health?

According to several studies, ejaculating frequently—during sex, masturbation, or while sleeping—can reduce men’s risk of prostate cancer.

A 2016 study got a bit more specific on what the researchers mean by “frequently.” After surveying 32,000 men from 1992 to 2010, the study found that participants who reported ejaculating at least 21 times per month during their 20s were 19 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ejaculated seven times per month or less. If you’re in your 40s, there’s even better news: frequent ejaculation reduces your prostate cancer risk by 22 percent.

What does your Prostate do?

Although men hear about the prostate regularly – mainly in the context of prostate cancer – the fact is that most of us don’t even know what the prostate does in the body. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland that plays an important role in ejaculation. It produces the fluid in semen and helps push this fluid out when a man ejaculates.

According to a 2016 study in European Eurology, men who ejaculate more frequently are less likely to develop prostate cancer, compared to those who ejaculate less often.

“While our findings should be confirmed in studies that evaluate the potential biological mechanisms underlying the observed associations, the results of our study suggest that ejaculation and safe sexual activity throughout adulthood could be a beneficial strategy for reducing the risk of prostate cancer,” Jennifer Rider, lead author of the study, said in a press release.

This study wasn’t the first to make the connection, though. An Australian study of 2,338 men found that men who averaged 4.6 to seven ejaculations a week were 36 percent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 than men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week, on average.

This means that men should still engage in sexual intercourse and other activities, but that they also should significantly limit the number of times they ejaculate as part of the session. If putting the reins on your ejaculation sounds a bit scary, let’s take a closer look at this philosophy.

The reasoning behind controlled ejaculation frequency, according to Taoists, is that the body has a limited supply of primordial energy. A man’s general lifespan, as well as his sexual lifespan, are determined by the lifestyle he lives and how quickly he uses up his energy. Certain lifestyle habits can replenish and strengthen that energy, and controlled ejaculation frequency is one of them.

Basically, men want to increase as much as possible the amount of age-defying hormones that are secreted during sexual excitement while simultaneously reducing as much as possible the loss of semen and the related hormones through ejaculation. The retention of these substances can be reused by the body to increase strength.

Taoist philosophy also maintains that this practice allows men to maintain consistently high testosterone levels and libido, along with greater levels of semen and sperm. Another reported benefit is that it strengthens the brain. Believers maintain that semen contains essential nutrients and hormones that are absorbed by the prostate. From there they enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body, including the brain. It’s a scientific fact that both cerebrospinal fluids and semen contain the same basic ingredients, therefore the idea that semen can nourish the brain is not farfetched.

A 2018 study found that men who abstained from ejaculation for seven days showed a peak rise in serum testosterone of 145.7 percent of baseline. Scores of studies have demonstrated that low testosterone levels are associated with a variety of symptoms, including flagging libido, abdominal obesity, loss of muscle strength and tone, fatigue, and erectile dysfunction. Therefore, steps that help maintain or raise testosterone levels are probably desirable for many men and controlled ejaculation frequency may be one of those steps.

Conclusion

So what does it all mean? Well, in a nutshell – the bottom line is that fairly frequent ejaculation is good for your health and can noticeably decrease your chances of getting prostate cancer. If you already ejaculate 20 times per month or more – keep up the good work! If you ejaculate less than 20 times per month, you now have incentive to ratchet things up and add a few more ejaculations to your “to do” list.
